About us

Opción Rural began with a simple belief: you don’t need acres of land to live a little closer to the earth. A balcony, a windowsill, or a corner of a small apartment is enough to start.

The name means “the rural option” — and that’s exactly what this site is about. It’s the idea that the values of country living — growing your own, wasting less, working with nature instead of against it — belong to everyone, including those of us in apartments and cities.

This site focuses on something most people assume needs a backyard: composting in small spaces. When I first tried to compost on my balcony, I made every mistake possible. The bin smelled. Fruit flies showed up. I had no idea what could go in and what couldn’t. There was plenty of advice online for people with gardens, but almost nothing for someone working with a few square feet of outdoor space and a neighbor on the other side of the wall.

So I learned the hard way, and Opción Rural is where I share what actually works.

Here you’ll find practical, tested guidance on:

  • Getting started — choosing a system, what to compost, and setting up without overwhelm
  • Odor and pest control — keeping your bin clean, fresh, and neighbor-friendly
  • Gear and setups — honest looks at bins, worm systems, and DIY builds for tight spaces
  • Using your compost — turning your scraps into healthy soil for balcony plants and pots

Everything here is written for real apartment life: limited space, shared walls, no yard, and the goal of doing something good with food waste instead of throwing it away.

Whether you’re composting to cut down on waste, to feed your balcony garden, or simply to feel a bit more connected to where your food comes from, you’re in the right place.

Thanks for stopping by — and welcome to the rural option.
